Exploratory, desk based research on the future of digital content for museum education for The British Education Technology Agency (Becta)

WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?

March-May, 2006

WHAT DID IT INVOLVE?

In the contemporary digital worlds, which we now operate within, public sector institutions are facing rapid and dramatic transformations. These transformations are in part due to the impact digital and web technologies are having on how content is created, managed and accessed. This in turn has lead to a re-examination of the role of modern public institutions in today's society and how they met new user demands.

In this context, it is necessary for government departments and funding agencies to fully understand the implications of such changes. To address this The British Education Technology Agency (Becta) commissioned Polar Produce to research and review the implications for digital content creation and sustainability within the musuem and cultural sector.

The report (launched in Autumn 2006) summarises the main findings from an initial investigation into digital eLearning content generation and sustainability for museums, galleries and science centres. The report summaries the findings from current literature and interviews held with key stakeholders from various museum and cultural institutions across the UK.
