Pop-Up Landscapes and Wiki Urban Planning Workshop, Hangar, Barcelona

2009-02-01

Workshop focus: Exploring New Visualisation Tools for Community Participation in the Transformations of the Built Environment

Thursday 26 & Friday 27 February 17h-21h Saturday 28 10h-14h 16h-20h Presentation : Saturday 28 20h30
Participation : 50 euros Workshop Leaders: Pop-Up Landscapes team, with invited guest: Peter Tattersall, Architect (FI)

About

Taking the Pop-Up Landscapes art installation as its starting point, this workshop explores how to develop community tools for engagement in the design and preservation of the built environment.

The first prototype of Pop-Up Landscapes has been technically realized at Hangar, which is situated in the neighborhood of Poble Nou, Barcelona. Currently this neighborhood is experiencing one of Europe’s major urban redevelopment programmes the 22@ urban plan. As a result over the last ten years the neighborhood and its communities have experienced radical changes both to the built environment and to its sociocultural life.

Considering these issues prior to the workshop and in consultation with members of the neighborhood case studies will be selected. These case studies will focus on areas within which the communities are concerned about the preservation of the built environment and sociocultural lifestyles.

For this workshop we have also invited Finnish architect Peter Tattersall to join us. Peter has been developing a method called Wiki Planning.

Wiki Planning is part of a wider attempt to consider what the implications of web 2.0 might be on architecture and planning, and whether or not social media (and phenomena arising from it) might be used to make planning more democratic. The intention is to develop a new method of public participation for use in the planning process of municipal authorities. The process uses miniature wooden models to support participant thinking of the design of the urban space. Their models are photographed and transformed into architectural sketches and maps. The method is currently been deployed in Helsinki city.

Combining the visualization techniques employed in Pop-Up Landscapes, along with the Wiki Planning method the workshop outcomes will be a series of visual maps and architectural sketches, which will be displayed at Hangar at the end of the workshop and presented to the Poble Nou community for their consideration and feedback.

Come Outside at Enter_Unknown Territories, Cambridge

2007-04-29

'Come Outside', Polar Produce's bike powered project on energy transfer hit the streets on the 27th and 28th April in Cambridge, as part of Enter_Unknown Territories festival. We had a top time at the festival - and the project was run as part of the conference and main festival activities.

During 'Come Outside', participants were invited to come on a bike ride with Polar Produce, as they cycled they powered batteries via the bike dynamo. Cycling for 3 kilometers the each group could boil enough water for one cup of tea. Once the group had reached their destination Polar Produce gave a short informal lecture on energy transfer and how the energy generated could be used for powering other devices.

The project was well received by festival goers and we met loads of people and artists - check out the BBC documentations of the project; Active Ingredient's location based game, which is played by monitoring your heart rate and Mongrel's, very wicked MediaShed, video sniffin' and other projects (see links below).

NIP 2007 - Bristol Workshop and Performances

2007-03-30

We had a very successful first NIP event in Bristol (30th March-1st April). For three days artists from the UK (Torsten Lauschmann; Kathy Hinde and Tom Bugs); The Netherlands (Sonia Cillari, Tom Verbruggen, Isaac Carlos) and Portugal (Andre Sier, Andre Goncalves and Rudolfo Quintas) came together and discussed, developed and performed their work.

The public talks on Friday, 31st March at the Watershed Media Centre we're well attended with people participating over the day in the talks and artists discussions. On Saturday, 31st May the public performances at the Arnolfini art centre (Dark Studio) we're also very well received as were the Cube Cinema wrap up live events on Sunday 1st April. Thanks to everyone who attended the event particular those who specially travelled from across the UK (London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Cardiff) as well as Ireland, Finland and even some via Australia.

Zach Lieberman lead a great workshop on computer vision techniques and Openframeworks (a programming language that he has co-developed in this area). Computer vision is one of the central approaches pushing what is possible within interactive, real-time music, installation and live performance. Zach's open and informative approach to leading the workshop, meant that all artists involved found value in the event and we're able to see possibilities of how to extend their practice.

Check out the main project website on www.newinterfaces.net - it will become the main portal for disseminating the outcomes of the event and knowledge gained during the workshop series. Our aim is to ensure that the website becomes a resource not only for the artists directly involved in NIP but others interested in working in this area.

Networked Performance Practice via the Grid

2006-10-10

Following on from the 'Taggin' Workshop', Polar Produce will present a more theoretical paper on the 'The Art of Taggin': Locative-based Performance and the Construction of Shared Interpretations', at the Location Grid Technology Symposium, 19th October 2006, Bristol University.

The symposium will summarize previous workshops happenings and explore the links between eScience and the performance arts. Practitioners working in the areas of online and distributed networked performance from the US, UK and Japan will present work via live link up using the Bristol University Grid.

Wondering what is the 'Grid'?

Grids are like 'super Internets' for high-performance computing. They bring together geographically and organisationally dispersed computational resources, which allows for various types of collaboration (e.g. from teleconference to gaming to high end virtual worlds) to occur.

Taggin' Workshop

2006-09-18

Polar Produce were recently invited by Dr. Angela Piccini, Drama Department, Bristol University to faciliate a workshop on the links between semantic web, locative based devices and access grid technologies.

The workshop used the notion of 'tagging' as a means to create user generated knowledge systems in semantic and Web 2 spaces. Considering tagging as a form of folksonomy in social software programs (e.g, Flicker, del.icio.us) the workshop explored how such forms of knowledge creation can be used to challenge existing taxonomies and develop more inclusive understandings of artistic and performance practice.

This was achieved by a practical, hands-on, paper and scissors workshop, where participants were asked to collaborate and create a database and carry out on-the-fly tagging of a live performance scene. These excerise were used to discuss the relations and pros and cons between semantic web, locative devices and access grid knowledge construction and transfer.

The project is at a very early stage but the main idea is to explore the use of the 'specks' as wearable devices for live performance. Our focus at this stage will be on creating what we are calling 'speckled skins' i.e., placing the specks on parts of the body and playing with gesture and body movement. At this stage we cannot say much more but details will follow later this year - so watch this space.
