ABOUT
STAR Radio was a broadcasting event that happened in Cardiff in 2005, initiated by artist, Jennie Savage. The STAR area can be found on the Eastern side of Cardiff and comprises of the suburban wards of Splott, Tremorfa, Adamsdaown and Roath, (making the acronym, STAR). Through the STAR Radio project, Jennie sought to explore and map this area in order to create an audio archive that represented a multiplicity of voices from this place. As part of this project, she commissioned a variety of artists to create pieces for STAR Radio. The project resulted in one week broadcast, exhibition and publication.

Star Gone Tones was a site-specific audio piece created for STAR Radio, which was composed of two layers, one layer focused on the types of sounds that people associated with the different 'star' neighborhoods, the second layer focused on their accents and vocal intonations.

To capture the types of sounds that people associated with their neighborhood, a sound survey, which involved asking people what sounds they associated with their area as well as their sound memories was carried out. The outcomes of the survey led to the creation of a set of five sound-poems. The poems were then given to people from each neighborhood to read, in-situ on the street, in the shops, homes etc from which their original survey responses were collected. In reading the poems the richness of the vocal accents and intonations was captured. These readings were used to create the final five 'Star Gone Tone' compositions, which during the live radio broadcast were mixed, along with live phone-in recordings of the poems.
